and the surrounding rivers and hills.
Walking & Trekking - One of the best ways to explore Laos is to trek. There
are plenty of mountain trails, biking trails, and camping grounds all over the mountains.
You can go to Ban Nalan Trek and the villages of Akha, which is found in Nam Ha
Forest Camp. Explore Piang Ngam Trek, where you can stay at a traditional village.
Use a specialist local tour operator to help you choose which trails to use, such
as in Attapeu. Other interesting places to visit are the waterfalls and countless
ethnic villages, which are off the beaten track, filled with untouched natural resources.
Culture & Tradition Exploration - A huge portion of the population in Lao
is composed of the Laos people. There are also related groups, which call themselves
Tai, Red Tai and Black Tai, to name a few. In 1995, there were already 43 ethnicities,
living in the provinces and in the mountains. There are also plenty of Chinese and
Vietnamese living in Laos. The main religion in the country is Buddhism, of which
60% of its people are Buddhist. Laos is very keen to preserve whatever they can
in the form of arts and literature. Exotic and distinct, Laos offers travelers a
unique holiday with its ancient Wats, French colonial heritage, diverse ethnic minorities
and spectacular scenery. One of things to do in Laos is exploring the country's
many ancient monuments, palaces and temples which are scattered all over the place.
Cruise the Mekong - Meandering along the Mekong River from Pakse on a converted
teak barge (www.vatphou.com) is an idyllic way to see the country. Spend two nights
on board, visiting Wat Phu, temples and traditional villages.
Rafting - Why not try white water rafting whilst in Laos as the country is
filled with numerous rivers and dense jungles, as well as deep gorges. A white water
rafting escapade may even take you to caves and coves all around the Mekong River.
The rivers in Laos can be described as challenging or mellow, depending on the season.
Wildlife - Laos's pristine landscape hosts a variety of flora and fauna,
including rare primates, mammals and birds. Freshwater dolphins can be found in
the Mekong River. There is still some unexploded ordnance in the countryside, and
official advice should be taken about which areas to avoid.
Cycling - A great, ecologically friendly way to get around Lao is by bicycle. With
a population of only about 6 million people, Laos has light traffic outside the
main towns and biking around the country's green hills is gaining popularity. It
is best to bring your own bike if you plan on a longer trip, but for shorter trips,
many tour companies and guest houses rent mid-range mountain bikes. There are currently
organized bike tours to the mountains and ethnic villages in
Luang
Namtha. Other great places to rent a bike are Vang Vieng and
Luang Prabang.
